September Workday 2015

What a glorious rainy day out in the Mālaola!
We pulled out THIRTEEN bags of weeds and moved mulch into a huge section of the entrance. With the recent rains our plants have gotten huge... and the weeds are growing rampant, we are in full battle with them!

Mahalo to all of the dedicated volunteers who came out in the rain to work. And a special Mahalo to players from the St. Louis High School Football Team for your hard work!

August Workday 2015

With lots of water and lots of sunshine of summer, our garden is flourishing! Unfortunately this also means that the weeds are growing... like weeds. We spent the morning with a hardworking core group pulling weeds, SIXTEEN BAGS in total!!!

Mahalo for all of the hard work in the hot sun!

Mālama ʻĀina Field School visits the Mālaola, June 2015

On Tuesday June 23, 2015, the Mālama ʻĀina Field School, from Nānākuli Intermediate and High School, came to visit the Mālaola. We toured the garden, learned about some of the different native plants and uses... and got to work!!

We cleared 29 bags of weeds from the Mālaola, moved mulch to create a path and worked together to move dozens of rocks to line the entrance. Mahalo Field School Students, awesome job!

May Workday 2015

Summer has started! Our plants are thriving... hidden amongst the dried cover crop... our plumeria trees have flowers and our Kukui nut trees are growing taller!

We have been diligently weeding one side of the Mālaola... and today we could tell that our efforts are making a dent, there are barely any weeds on that side of the garden.

The other THREE sides, however, are a different story... this month we started to tackle the weeds on the back end of the Mālaola and with the same persistence, we hope that in the next few months will start to see fewer weeds. We know that we will never completely get rid of weeds, but we hope at least fewer!!

In addition to pulling TEN large bags of weeds, we started to mulch around the crown flower in the front of the garden. We will spend the summer adding in rock walls and mulching pathways into our Mālaola, and watch our garden come alive!

Mahalo to all of our hardworking ʻOhana that came out this month!
